Hyundai E&C lands UAE power and desalination project

A consortium of Hyundai Engineering & Construction and Italain engineer Ansaldo has won a US$ 988 million turnkey engineering procurement and construction (EPC) contract to refurbish and extend the Mirfa power generation and water desalination plant in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

The plant, which is being developed by GDF Suez on behalf of the Abu Dhabi Water & Electricity Authority is located some 110 km southwest of the city of Abu Dhabi. The project will see its capacity raised to produce 1.6 GW of electricity and 200 million litres of fresh water per day. Construction is scheduled to take 30.5 months.

Kim Seung-ho of Hyundai E&C’s power business division said, “The future of the Middle East construction market is in power and desalination plants. This is expected to spur additional construction projects.”

Hyundai added that this project had taken the value of overseas orders it has won this year to US$ 6.71 billion
