China: Tibet plans to invest CNY 5 billion (US$ 623 million) in the construction of new roads and highways in 2006.

According to local press reports the Chinese central government has invested CNY 14.7 billion (US$ 1.83 billon) and constructed almost 13000 km of roads in the region over the pastfive years. This includes 779 km of the Qinghai-Tibet Highway, about 528 km of the Sichuan-Tibet Highway. Parts of the China-Nepal Highway and the Lhasa-Gonggar Highway have also been renovated. However, over 20 towns and 1000 villages remain unconnected to the regions road network.
